Edinburgh Atos Protest – May 9th

April 16, 2011

11.00am – 1.00pm Monday, 9th May
Atos Origin, 44 York Place, (near top of Broughton St)

The Edinburgh Coalition Against Poverty and Black Triangle will be protesting outside ATOS healthcare offices in Edinburgh on Monday the 9th of May.

ATOS is a multinational corporation that won a recent contract to re-test all disabled welfare recipients, following the Government’s promise to find more claimants fit for work. However, the assessments have proved extremely controversial with 68% of claimants being found to able to work.

But when these claimants have appealed the decision to a tribunal, 40% have been successful, rising to 70% if disabled claimants appeal with some legal help, suggesting that something is very wrong with ATOS’s assessment procedure. ATOS have decided that people with terminal cancer, schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease are able to start work immediately.

Many disabled people say they have felt bullied and humiliated by ATOS. Several disabled people have  committed suicide as they are forced to find minimum wage jobs that aren’t even there. Even the British Medical Association is sceptical of the private company.

PROTEST AND FIGHT BACK! NO SCAPEGOATING OF DISABLED PEOPLE!
